‘Dyeing Wool with Foraged, Garden and Exotic Plants’ 24th July 1:30-5pm
‘Dyeing Wool with Foraged, Garden and Exotic Plants’
Workshop July 24th Half Day 1.30-5pm
In this workshop Chris from Blind Ram Yarsn will explain about mordants and how to use them, which plants are useful for dyeing, and demonstrate plant dyeing techniques for wool using at least 3 dyebaths.
Each attendee will take home a session-dyed mini skein of yarn.
The workshop will cover
Different animal fibres and how to prepare them for dyeing.
Explain how to mordant the fibres to enable the dye to fix.
Explore the exciting possibilities of plant use for dyeing, which plants can be used, and which bits of the plant are effective.
Demonstrate at least 3 different plant sources and how to dye with them. One source will be foraged, one will be a garden plant, and one will be an exotic bought in plant.
Briefly talk about the pH value of the dyebath, and how to change it and demonstrate the effect of pH change on dye colour.
WARNING! Some people may find the dye bath fumes exacerbate certain health issues such as asthma. People may wish to bring a mask.
Workshop attendees will be able to take a small skein of wool dyed in the session home with them. More session-dyed skeins can be available for purchase.
